How to grow Bean 'Montpellier'

  • Full Sun

  • Medium

Plant in spring after avg last frost. If weather is still cool & wet, wait until it warms up a bit before planting. When plants are 1" tall, thin to 4 – 6" apart.

Try to plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Montpellier is thought of as tender, so it is really important to plant out well after your last frost date. A soil ph of between 6.0 and 6.8 is ideal for Montpellier as it does best in weakly acidic soil.

Growing Montpellier from seed

Pkg. recommends sowing directly outside in soil but it is possible (says spidra) to start them indoors and transplant later. Sow 1" (2.54 cm) deep.

Sow at a depth of approx. 1.95 inches (5.0 cm) and aim for a distance of at least 3.9 inches (10.0 cm) between Bean plants. Soil temperature should be kept higher than 16°C / 61°F to ensure good germination.

By our calculations, you should look at sowing Montpellier about 14 days after your last frost date.

Transplanting Montpellier

As Montpellier is tender, ensure temperatures are mild enough to plant out - wait until after your last frost date to be on the safe side.
