How to grow Chinese Wisteria 'Amethyst'

  • Full Sun

  • Medium

Water well during the first year as the plant becomes established. Add a top dressing of blood fish and bone every spring.
During the growing season, train and tie in the selected stems to form the main framework. If the plant is to cover a frame work or wall, choose the stems to gain height first before selecting laterals. Tie in to the support
Prune the whippy growth to 4 or 5 buds from main stem after flowering in mid summer
Tie in the selected framework stems through the growing season. Prune again to 2 buds when the plant is dormant in mid winter, to form flowering spurs.

Try to plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Amethyst is thought of as hardy, so this plant will survive close to or on freezing temperatures.

Growing Amethyst from seed

Very slow from seed. Wisteria easily germinate and grow from seed but may take many years to flower, typically seven or eight years. In addition, they will not always grow true to the parent plant as many wisteria are hybrids.
Commercially, wisteria are grafted on to a rootstock provided by the seed grown plants. The home gardner can most easily propagate wisteria from semi ripe cuttings taken in late summer or hard wood cuttings taken in late autumn. Wisteria can also be frown by layering a side shoot. Vegetative propagation produces plants identical to the parent plant, are old enough to flower the next season and they do not have a graft union that may fail in later years

Transplanting Amethyst

Dig a hole twice as wide as the pot and add some moist compost and a hand full of blood fish and bone. Position the plant so that the root ball is level with the surrounding soil surface, the graft union being well above the soil surface. Fill in with more compost firm in and water throughly.
Take out the cane that the plant had been supported on in the nursery and tie the plant into the support.
Wisteria enjoy a sunny spot in order to flower well.

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Amethyst is a hardy plant.
