How to grow Romaine lettuce 'Red Cos'

  • Partial Sun

  • High

Red Cos likes a position of partial sun and remember to water often. Keep in mind when planting that Red Cos is thought of as tender, so remember to wait until your soil is warm and the night time temperature is well above freezing before moving outside. Planting Red Cos in loamy, potting mix and clay soil with a ph of between 6.2 and 6.8 is ideal for as it does best in weakly acidic soil.

Growing Red Cos from seed

Try to aim for a seed spacing of at least 11.7 inches (30.0 cm) and sow at a depth of around 0.23 inches (0.6 cm). Soil temperature should be kept higher than 5°C / 41°F to ensure good germination.

By our calculations, you should look at sowing Red Cos about 60 days before your last frost date.

Transplanting Red Cos

As Red Cos is tender, ensure temperatures are mild enough to plant out - wait until after your last frost date to be on the safe side.
