Snow Pea 'Taichung 11'

Pisum sativum var. saccharatum

How to grow Snow Pea 'Taichung 11'

  • Full Sun

  • Very High

A full sun position will ensure your plant thrives and remember to water very often. Keep in mind when planting that Taichung 11 is thought of as half hardy, so remember to watch your frost dates and ensure you have this plant protected when the temperature dips. Taichung 11 tends to grow best in a soil ph of between 5.5 and 6.5 meaning it does best in weakly acidic soil.

Growing Taichung 11 from seed

It can be sown direct from seed, but if you have snail/slug problems, it’s probably best to start them inside and transplant the sprouts when they’re 3" tall or so.

Ensure a distance of 2.97 inches (7.62 cm) between seeds when sowing - look to sow at a depth of approximately 0.99 inches (2.54 cm). Soil temperature should be kept higher than 4°C / 39°F to ensure good germination.

By our calculations, you should look at sowing Taichung 11 about 42 days before your last frost date.

Transplanting Taichung 11

Peas require support and if you don’t provide any, they’ll climb up whatever other plant is nearby. Their climbing ability is weak so smooth sticks don’t work well. Instead use discarded branches and other stakes with rough edges and branches that give the peas something to hang onto.

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Taichung 11 is a half hardy plant.

Harvesting Taichung 11

When pods are about 4" long and/or you can feel small peas inside. Do not let the peas get larger as the pod will be less tender to eat. It is also possible to harvest the tendrils for stir-fry but do not harvest too many or it’ll check the plant’s growth.

This variety tends to be ready for harvesting by mid spring.
