How to grow Chinese kale 'Green pearl'

  • Full Sun

Most Oriental vegetables are in the Brassica or Cole family. These mustards are easy to grow, once we understand that they are highly sensitive to day-length. In the spring, Oriental vegetables will rapidly bolt as the days get longer. In order to get a full-sized plant, they must be started very early so that they’re full-sized by mid-May. Cold, heavy soils may not be suitable for this early crop, so a cloche or cold-frame can be used to warm the soil. They can be planted again after the middle of July, as the days get shorter so the plants do not bolt right away. Fall planting enables the plant to grow often through the winter and until the next spring, in a mild winter area.

Flea beetles will eat small round holes in the leaves. The damage is unsightly, but does not make the leaves inedible. Flea beetles (phyllotreta spp.) cause many small bullet shot-like holes in leaves. Most serious damage is on soft-leaves, young plants and oriental greens. The tiny beetles hop when you shake the plant. Cultural controls include sticky-traps, floating row covers, providing shade for the plants, and drenching the soil around the plant with nematodes. Nematodes will be effective when applied when eggs are hatching and larvae are feeding on the roots of the plants. Adults overwinter in weeds, and begin feeding in early spring. The eggs are laid on or near the roots from the end of May to early July.

Green pearl needs a soil ph of 6.0 to 7.2 (weakly acidic soil - weakly alkaline soil).

Growing Green pearl from seed

Try to aim for a seed spacing of at least 1.46 feet (45.0 cm) and sow at a depth of around 0.2 inches (0.5 cm). For optimal germination, soil temperature should be a minimum of 10°C / 50°F.

Transplanting Green pearl

Thin seedlings to different spacings, depending on whether it is grown for individual leaves or full sized plants. For full sized plants, thin or transplant to 15-30cm (6-12").
