How to grow Melon 'Harvest Queen'

  • Full Sun

  • Medium

Soil and Water: Keep well watered through maturity, allowing soil surface to dry between waterings. Overwatering during ripening will cause splitting and loss of sweetness.1
Harvesting and Seed Storage: Stems turn brown and separates easily from the melon when ripe. Store seeds in cool, dry, dark conditions.1

Try to plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Harvest Queen is thought of as tender, so remember to wait until your soil is warm and the night time temperature is well above freezing before moving outside. Harvest Queen requires a potting mix and loamy soil with a ph of 6.1 - 7.5 - it grows best in weakly acidic soil to weakly alkaline soil.

Growing Harvest Queen from seed

Direct seed in garden in rows 4-6 feet apart when danger of frost has passed. During germination, keep entire seedbed evenly moist and warm.1 See Planting Out / Transplanting instructions.

Try to aim for a seed spacing of at least 4.95 feet (1.52 metres) and sow at a depth of around 0.78 inches (2.0 cm). Soil temperature should be kept higher than 21°C / 70°F to ensure good germination.

By our calculations, you should look at sowing Harvest Queen about 14 days before your last frost date.

Transplanting Harvest Queen

Likes to be planted in clusters with 3-4 plants per group. Deeply fertile soil produces optimum yield of fruits. Enrich soil with compost.1

Ensure that temperatures are mild (minimum night temperatures should be around 21°C / 70°F) and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Harvest Queen is a tender plant.

Harvesting Harvest Queen

Expect harvests to start to occur in late summer.
