Position in a full sun location and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Southport Red is thought of as very hardy, so this plant will tend to go dormant over the long winter months. Planting Southport Red in loamy, clay and sandy soil with a ph of between 6.0 and 7.0 is ideal for as it does best in weakly acidic soil to neutral soil.

Aim to sow 0.98 inches (2.5 cm) deep and try to ensure a gap of at least 1.95 inches (5.0 cm). Soil temperature should be kept higher than 13°C / 55°F to ensure good germination.
