Shiso Etymology

names with “mint” “basil” “cinamon” and other herbs/spices are an attempt to name the flavors of this plant. The botanical epithet is from the Latin frutescens meaning “shrubby”

Shiso Folklore & Trivia

The red variety is used in Japan to color umeboshi and pickled ginger. Shiso forms part of Japanese seven spices which originated more than 300 years ago in Kyoto.(1)
