Coontie Etymology

This herbaceous plant looks like a small fern or a palm. The coontie has stiff, feather-like leaves up to 3 ft. in length. The coontie is the sole host plant for the larva of the rare Atala butterfly (Eumaeus Atala), once thought to be extinct in Florida.1
