How to grow Garden Gladiolus 'Comet'

  • Full Sun

  • Medium

Full Sun to Part Shade
Well Drained Soil
Mature plants = 12-18" wide

Try to plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Comet is thought of as half hardy, so remember to protect this plant from frosts and low temperatures. Comet tends to grow best in a soil ph of between 6.7 and 7.0 meaning it does best in weakly acidic soil - neutral soil.

Growing Comet from seed

Suggestions for climates with longer summers:

  • plant bulbs in grouped rows of 5-9 ~ 6" apart
  • plant in bi-weekly intervals
  • in Z9 you can began planting after frost and continue through summer
  • expect blooms 60-100 days after planting
Try to aim for a seed spacing of at least 7.02 inches (18.0 cm) and sow at a depth of around 4.29 inches (11.0 cm).

Transplanting Comet

Ensure that temperatures are mild (minimum night temperatures should be around 2°C / 36°F) and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Comet is a half hardy plant.

Harvesting Comet

This variety tends to be ready for harvesting by mid summer.
