Spinacia oleracea

How to grow Spinach 'Hector'

  • Full Sun

  • Low

Plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to apply water fairly sparingly. Keep in mind when planting that Hector is thought of as half hardy, so it will need protecting in periods of cold weather. Ideally plant in loamy soil and try to keep the ph of your soil between the range of 6.0 and 7.0 as Hector likes to be in weakly acidic soil to neutral soil.

Growing Hector from seed

Aim to sow 0.49 inches (1.25 cm) deep and try to ensure a gap of at least 3.12 inches (8.0 cm). Soil temperature should be kept higher than 8°C / 46°F to ensure good germination.

By our calculations, you should look at sowing Hector about 60 days before your last frost date.

Transplanting Hector

Ensure that temperatures are mild (minimum night temperatures should be around 0°C / 32°F) and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Hector is a half hardy plant.
