Smoke bush is a member of the Cotinus family. Its botanical name is Cotinus coggygria.

Slow-growing, open crown, round small tree eventually reaching 12 to 15 feet tall, (occasionally 20), and 10 to 12 feet wide. Leaves emerge purple fading to dark green in the summer. Wonderful accent for a border and can be planted as a specimen tree where the black, showy multiple trunk can be displayed.1

Smoke bush grows as a deciduous and is a flowering ornamental. Being a Deciduous plant, it will shed its leaves annually.
