The association of India with indigo is revealed in the Greek word for the dye, indikon, meaning ‘blue dye from India’ or more literally ‘Indian substance’.
It’s native habitat is unsure since it has been naturalized in so many parts of the world for centuries. However, it it believed that the plant is originally from India, based on the fact that India has some of the oldest relics that were dyed using Indigo.
