Radish 'Philadelphia white box'

Once germinated, keep evenly watered — dry spells will cause the radish to get hot and pithy.

Position in a full sun location and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Philadelphia white box is thought of as half hardy, so it will need cloching or fleece protection when the temperature dips. Philadelphia white box needs a loamy, clay and sandy soil with a ph of 5.5 to 6.8 (weakly acidic soil).

Look to ensure a distance 0.98 inches (2.5 cm) between seeds when sowing - bury at a depth of at least 0.47 inches (1.2 cm) deep. Soil temperature should be kept higher than 13°C / 55°F to ensure good germination.

Do not transplant. Sow in stone-free soil in early spring to early summer, and again in late summer for fall crop (if desired). Thrives in cool weather. Make successive sowings every 2 weeks. However, you can start sowing as soon as the ground has thawed and air temperatures are averaging over 40 degrees on most days. Depending on what your springs are like (short and fast, long and drawn out), these conditions may emerge much sooner than or much later than the 4 week guide might suggest. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your start date. Cloches can be used for extra-early plantings.

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Philadelphia white box is a half hardy plant.
