Harvesting Red Epicure

Broad bean Red Epicure Etymology

Vicia faba. Heirloom, Developed in Italy, probably a descendant of Negreta.
Semi-Bush habit…short climber, to 3 feet.
This bean is probably an ancestor of another fleshy-podded, gourmet pole bean in Australia, called Epicure. (which please see). Epicure probably got its extra fleshy pods, and its name, from Red Epicure. This would also explain how it is that Epicure has somewhat flattened pods. Flat pod is an atypical characteristic for Phaseolus, but quite normal for Vicia faba.
Other dark seeded, flat podded bean varieties which are likely related to Epicure include: Extra Early Red Seed, Extra Precoce a Grano Violetto, Extra Early Purple Seed, Negreta.
