How to grow Broad bean 'Express'

  • Full Sun

Plants may need additional support of canes or string. Pinch out the growing tips, when beans in full flower, to reduce black fly infestations and encourage the pods to swell.
Pick the pods regularly as they become large enough, but whilst still young and tender.

Express is generally regarded as a hardy plant, so it can be safe to leave outdoors for the majority of winter (although if in doubt, using a row cover is often a good idea).

Growing Express from seed

Sow directly into well prepared ground. Double rows allowing 25cm between plants and 60cm between rows. Sow early to late spring

Aim to sow 1.95 inches (5.0 cm) deep and try to ensure a gap of at least 9.75 inches (25.0 cm).

By our calculations, you should look at sowing Express about 1 days after your last frost date.

Transplanting Express

Express is hardy, so ensure you wait until all danger of frost has passed in your area before considering planting outside.

Harvesting Express

This variety tends to mature and be ready for harvest in mid summer.
