Collect mature seed cones from the Magnolia tree when still not fully opened. Position the cones in a dry and ventilated area to wait for the cones to fully open; which will happen in a few days. Take seeds out of the cones and put the seeds in a bowl of lukewarm water to help loosen the outer seed coat. Soak the seeds overnight or for several days. The red coats will come out easily from each individual seed. Put the seeds in a container with water and discard any that will float, as these may not germinate. Place the seeds on paper towels and leave them overnight to dry. Fill a plastic bag with peat moss and place the seeds in the peat moss. Seal the bag. Store magnolia seeds in the refrigerator. Do not freeze the seeds. The seeds need to be refrigerated for at least 60 days before planting.1
