Kale 'Sunrise'

Brassica oleracea (Acephala Group)

How to grow Kale 'Sunrise'

  • Full Sun

  • Low

For use as cut “flowers”, remove lower leaves 3-4 times before harvest to encourage stem growth and a flower shape.

Try to plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to apply water fairly sparingly. Keep in mind when planting that Sunrise is thought of as very hardy, so this plant will tend to survive through freezing conditions. Planting Sunrise in loamy soil with a ph of between 6.0 and 7.5 is ideal for as it does best in weakly acidic soil to weakly alkaline soil.

Growing Sunrise from seed

Try to aim for a seed spacing of at least 2.97 inches (7.62 cm) and sow at a depth of around 0.25 inches (0.64 cm). Soil temperature should be kept higher than 13°C / 55°F to ensure good germination.

By our calculations, you should look at sowing Sunrise about 49 days before your last frost date.

Transplanting Sunrise

Sow indoors 4-6 weeks before planting out. Transplant into larger containers after first true leaves appear. Harden off about one week before planting out. Sow outdoors about 3 months before expected fall frost date, 1" apart, 1/4- 1/2" deep. Thin to stand 12-18" apart.

As Sunrise is very hardy, ensure temperatures are mild enough to plant out - wait until after your last frost date to be on the safe side.
