Most asters need a sunny spot but are tolerant of a little shade.. They require moisture to help prevent mildew but must not become waterlogged. Alkaline conditions are best but some woodland species are tolerant of more acid conditions
Division of mature clumps will retain the plants vigour
Taller varieties will require staking
Asters readily germinate from seed, but often do not grow true to the parent plant.
It is more reliable to take soft wood cuttings from spring growth, or tease off young offsets from around the clump.
Division of an existing clump is also a good option
Choose a sunny spot, with moisture retentive soil. Do not allow to dry out in the summer as this will promote mildew
Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Aster is a hardy plant.Seeds can be collected on a dry day in late autumn into a paper bag, but although they germinate easily, they may not grow true to the parent plant
These estimates for how long Aster takes to sprout, grow and harvest are from real observations from real gardeners, right around the world.
