The species name “ulmaria” means “elmlike,” a description attributed to either a resemblance in the shape of the leaves, or the fact that both the flower heads of this plant and the bark of the slippery elm contain salicylic acid. “Bridewort” is derived from the plant’s use as a strewing herb, particularly during the Elizabethan era, as it would be scattered over the aisle at weddings. The name “meadwort” comes from yet another use of the plant, as a flavoring for mead and other beverages.
In Welsh mythology, the magicians Gwydion and Math fab Mathonwy use flowers of broom, meadowsweet, and oak to create a wife (named Blodeuwedd) for Lleu Llaw Gyffes, who was cursed never to marry a human woman. Blodeuwedd, however, discontent with the marriage, takes a lover, plots to kill her husband, and ends up being turned into an owl.
