Poor germination rate can be improved by cold stratification for 3 to 6 months. When returning to the warm (20C) the sheed should be only lightly covered and kept in the light. It may take up to 6 months to germinate. Many seeds, up to 90%, do not contain an embryo, thought to be due to the short period during which the flowers can be successfully pollenated by insects(about 12 to 24 hours during the flowering period).
Site carefully, tall and long lived. Prefers moist subsoil, plant out when young to allow correct development of vulnerable fleshy roots
Tulip poplar is hardy, so ensure you wait until all danger of frost has passed in your area before considering planting outside.Seed heads last on the tree through winter before falling. Only 10% of seeds have potential viability.
