How to grow Sweet corn 'Ashworth'

  • Full Sun

  • High

Ashworth likes a position of full sun and remember to water often. Keep in mind when planting that Ashworth is thought of as tender, so remember to wait until your soil is warm and the night time temperature is well above freezing before moving outside. Ashworth needs a loamy and clay soil with a ph of 6.5 to 7.5 (weakly acidic soil to weakly alkaline soil).

Growing Ashworth from seed

Try to aim for a seed spacing of at least 7.8 inches (20.0 cm) and sow at a depth of around 1.17 inches (3.0 cm). Soil temperature should be kept higher than 21°C / 70°F to ensure good germination.

By our calculations, you should look at sowing Ashworth about 14 days after your last frost date.

Transplanting Ashworth

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Ashworth is a tender plant.

Harvesting Ashworth

When ears fill out, check regularly for sweetness; open-pollinated corn does not last long in the field at peak ripeness. Peel back the husk and press your thumb into a kernel; if it pops open and yields a sweet milky fluid it’s ready.
