The water lily gets its genus name from the Greek nymphaia, meaning “water nymph”1 or “water goddess”2, while tuberosa means “tuberous”3, and richardsonii is either for Richard Richardson, an 18th century English botanist; or for Sir John Richardson, an 18th century English explorer4.
