Madonna lily Folklore & Trivia

From hebrew page: Lily symbolizes purity for Christians of the virgin Mary (in English called “Madonna Lily”). Many paintings made by artists from various periods of European history, with Miriam depict the flower.

There are opinions that identify the word SHOSHANA as lily in Song of Songs (“Like a lily among the thorns, so is my darling among the maidens.” Song of Songs 2:2) not as rose as is customary to think. So for example Ibn Ezra describes it as a white flower, which has a good fragrance, and has a six-leaf flower and six stamens. But this recognition is not a certainty, because it does not fit with description as “Valley Lily”, because mostly it grows in the mountains.

In the seven stem Menorah of the Jewish Temple, the stems were designed in the shape of a lily. According Onkelus he translates “Praheha” as SHOSHANA.

In the temple of King Shlomo there were designs of lily on columns and basin. METSUDOT says that the name “lily” is synonymous with SIX – because it always has six leafs.

Six leaves of the flower form a shape that resembles the Star of David, and this is a source of importance of Star of David in Judaism.
