How to grow Bunching onion 'Guardsman'

  • Full Sun

  • Medium

Try to plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Guardsman is thought of as very hardy, so this plant will typically do well in a variety of different extremes of cold temperature. Planting Guardsman in loamy and sandy soil with a ph of between 6.0 and 7.0 is ideal for as it does best in weakly acidic soil to neutral soil.

Growing Guardsman from seed

For transplants, sow up to 100 seeds in a sterile seedling mix in a 4-6 inch pot. Cover the seeds to a depth of 1/8 inch. Place in a warm location and keep moist. If the tops reach over 5 inches before you transplant, cut to 3 inches high.

Sow at a depth of approx. 0.23 inches (0.6 cm) and aim for a distance of at least 3.9 inches (10.0 cm) between Bunching onion plants. Soil temperature should be kept higher than 13°C / 55°F to ensure good germination.

By our calculations, you should look at sowing Guardsman about 28 days before your last frost date.

Transplanting Guardsman

When planting out, take the clump and separate the grass-like seedlings and place in a shallow trench, 4-5 inches apart. Fill the trench around the seedlings and then water. Onion seedlings are tough and will perform amazingly well.

As Guardsman is very hardy, ensure temperatures are mild enough to plant out - wait until after your last frost date to be on the safe side.
