How to grow Chusan Palm

Pot on as the plant grows to a 13cm pot and finally a 20 cm pot and provide a minimum temperature of 7C over winter. If lower temperatures are expected, the plant can be protected insulation

As the plant matures it is possible to plant outside in a sunny sheltered spot for the summer if given protection from frost in the winter. The leaves are suceptable to wind damage.

Growing Chusan palm from seed

Soak the seeds for 24 hours in a flask of tepid water. Sow 6mm deep in well draining compost. Keep moist but avoid wet conditions. Fresh seeds will germinate within a few months

Transplanting Chusan palm

Plant individually, taking care not to damage the long root when large enough to handle in to 7cm pots.

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Chusan palm is a hardy plant.
