How to grow Meyer's lemon tree 'Improved meyer'

They prefer a temperature range of 70-55 Farenheit / 21-13 Celsius. Meyer Lemons go dormant at 54 Farenheit / 12 Celsius, and will be damaged at temperatures below 32 Farenheit / 0 Celsius.

They like even moisture, but they hate wet feet. Some people recommend putting in clay shards at the bottom of pots plus extra holes drilled to ensure optimal root health. Only water once you’ve checked that the soil is actually dry by putting fingers 2-3" deep.

Heavy feeder, it likes 2-1-1 or even 3-1-1 plus minerals.

If your tree is grafted, be sure to remove any suckers below the grafting line.

They don’t like shocks, be they transplants or temperatures.

A little pruning to keep their shape doesn’t hurt, and encourages growth. Any thorns, usually found on younger trees, can be pruned.

Self-fertile, only 1 is needed for fruiting. If kept purely indoors, you can lightly shake the tree or use tiny soft paintbrushes to pollinate.

Pests – scale, aphids, mites. Usually just some dish soap sprayed will be sufficient.

A full sun position will ensure your plant thrives and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Improved meyer is thought of as tender, so remember to wait until your soil is warm and the night time temperature is well above freezing before moving outside. Ensure your soil is sandy and has a ph of between 6.1 and 7.8 as Meyer's lemon tree is a weakly acidic soil to weakly alkaline soil loving plant.

Meyer Lemons tolerate being grown in containers. They prefer slightly sandy well-draining soil. Be careful not to plant too deep, the trunk will rot if below the soil line.

Ensure that temperatures are mild (minimum night temperatures should be around 0°C / 32°F) and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Improved meyer is a tender plant.

Meyer lemon is believed to be a hybrid of lemon and orange parentage. The tree was brought to the United States from Beijing, China in 1908 by Frank Meyer, a plant explorer of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
