Named for the little port town of Brindisi, Italy, the city’s name is derived from Brunda meaning “The head of a Deer”.
It’s ancient name was Brundisium. The splendor of Brindisi came about during the Roman age after being conquered in 267 BC by the Roman army following which it became one of the principal seaports during Roman rule as well as a principal embarkation point for the Crusaders during the Middle Ages. In the late 1800’s to 1914, Brindisi was the main stop for the Indian Mail Route with ships setting sale every Sunday afternoon for Port Said, Bombay, and Calcutta.
