How to grow Penstemon 'Rich Ruby'

  • Full Sun

  • Low

Fertilize once when planting, and then leave it alone – it will flower and be more cold resistant in lower fertility conditions. Prune hard in spring to encourage a bushy habit, and prune back by about 1/3 in winter + mulch heavily. And of course if you regularly prune dying flowers you’ll encourage more flowering.

May be prone to issues with slugs and snails.

Try to plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to apply water fairly sparingly. Keep in mind when planting that Rich Ruby is thought of as half hardy, so it will need protecting in periods of cold weather. A soil ph of between 5.5 and 7.0 is ideal for Rich Ruby as it does best in weakly acidic soil - neutral soil.
