How to grow Leek 'Carentan'

Leeks can be planted in clusters, rather than as single plants. Plant 4 or 6 seeds together. You can use soil blocks or cell packs for is purpose. The seeds need to be planted giving them some space between them so the roots are not too crowded. Since the flowers resemble those of ornamental alliums they can be planted in the flower garden.1

If allowed to flower leeks produce off sets at the base of the stem. These offsets can be eaten or used for propagation. Leeks can also be propagate from the plantlets that sometimes form on the flower head.1

Plant in a location that enjoys partial sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Carentan is thought of as very hardy, so this plant will tend to survive through freezing conditions.

Growing Carentan from seed

Try to aim for a seed spacing of at least 0.39 inches (1.0 cm) and sow at a depth of around 0.78 inches (2.0 cm). Soil temperature should be kept higher than 16°C / 61°F to ensure good germination.

Transplanting Carentan

Mke hole with dibber 6 in/15cm deep and place plant into each hole then fill with water. DO NOT FILL HOLE WITH SOIL

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Carentan is a very hardy plant.

Harvesting Carentan

These leeks are about two inches (5cm) thick.

This variety tends to be ready for harvesting by mid winter.
