How to grow Iris 'Speed Limit'

  • Full Sun

  • Medium

Irises prefer a full day of sun. They will not tolerate “wet feet” but want good drainage.

Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers, which can cause rot.

Try to plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Speed Limit is thought of as hardy, so this plant will grow or become dormant during the winter. Try to keep the ph of your soil between the range of 6.1 and 7.8 as Speed Limit likes to be in weakly acidic soil - weakly alkaline soil.

Growing Speed Limit from seed

Sow at a depth of approx. 0.99 inches (2.55 cm) and aim for a distance of at least 1.19 inches (3.05 cm) between Iris plants.

Transplanting Speed Limit

The best time to plant is between mid to late summer (e.g., July and August), avoiding temperature extremes. The best time to move is after the flowering, before new growth starts. Dig and divide very four years or so; cut rhizomes and foliage rather than tearing or breaking and allow cut surfaces to dry out in the light for several hours before replanting.

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Speed Limit is a hardy plant.
