Portulaca grandiflora

How to grow Moss rose 'Happy Hour Lemon'

  • Full Sun

  • Low

Prefers very well-drained soil. Water early in the day so that the foliage is dry by evening, to prevent fungal diseases.

Try to plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to apply water fairly sparingly. Keep in mind when planting that Happy Hour Lemon is thought of as tender, so it is imperative to wait until temperatures are mild before planting out of doors.

Growing Happy Hour Lemon from seed

Portulaca is very sensitive to day length. If you sow too early, even under greenhouse conditions, the plants can “rosette” – ie, stop growing without flowering. Once they rosette, they don’t recover, even if you provide them with “long daylight conditions” afterwards. To prevent this, only sow when the day length is more than 10 hours 30 minutes1.

Do not cover the seeds. Light is not required for germination, but it is beneficial. Damping off is common.

Soil temperature should be kept higher than 22°C / 72°F to ensure good germination.

Transplanting Happy Hour Lemon

Transplant in full sun after all danger of frost is past. Space plants 10 to 12 in. (25 to 30 cm) apart in welldrained soil.

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Happy Hour Lemon is a tender plant.
