Check your trees periodically for any broken, dead or diseased limbs and prune them as needed throughout the year. Look for any suckers or crossed or rubbing limbs too and prune as well. Trim anything hanging on or near the ground to help prevent disease and pests.
Few rules of thumb when pruning. In general citrus trees only need to be pruned every 3 to 5 years for improved health and to stimulate new growth aside from preventative maintenance described above. Never remove more than 25 percent of the trees mass in one year. Sterilize your tools between pruning each tree to avoid spreading disease. Whitewash any bark exposed to direct sunlight due to pruning or leaf loss to prevent sunburn. (Dilute half water/half water based interior latex white paint and paint it on exposed bark) Be sure to prune before they are ready to set flowers or you will delay production for that season.
