How to grow Oncidium Orchid

Oncidium

During the growing period water should be plentiful but for ripening of pseudobulbs, for flower inducement, and during the winter rest period watering is hardly necessary. They like at least 50 % humidity1 with plenty of ventilation and slight shade. Avoid direct sunshine. Whenever possible place your orchid outside, this allows it to be watered with rain and to experience temperature variations that encourage good growth and blooming.1

Oncidiums are propagated by dividing the psudobulbs. Cut or break apart psudobulbs making sure that each new plant has at least 4-6 psudobulbs to ensure good growth.1

Transplanting Oncidium orchid

They may be planted on tree fern slabs or cork bark with a little compost, but they are commonly placed in pots with very good drainage. A well draining orchid mix, replaced yearly or they may be grown semi hydroponically. Best time to repot is in early spring when roots and new growth begins to emerge (especially if changing to a new type of media), or just after flowers die back if keeping the same media.
