The tap root will develop over two summers in deep soil.
Seeds are usually sterile, Cultivate from from root cuttings.
A small piece of root 50mm long laid horizontally in the ground at a depth of 4-5cm will sprout in early spring and form a new plant.
If the root orientation is known (top as distinct from the bottom) then it may be planted vertically.
Best left undisturbed until harvest time in winter as broken roots will freely germinate. Roots can be taken at any time though.

Horseradish is still planted and harvested by hand. In addition to the usual horseradish sauce, it has been used as an expectorant and to treat urinary infections. As it is a skin irritant it has also been used in ointments for its warming effect in rheumatic conditions
