Common Poppy 'Scarlet'

Papaver somniferum

How to grow Common Poppy 'Scarlet'

  • Partial Sun

  • Low

Cut off the seed heads as the flowers fade, if you do not want the plant to self seed

Try to plant in a location that enjoys partial sun and remember to apply water fairly sparingly. Keep in mind when planting that Scarlet is thought of as half hardy, so remember to protect this plant from frosts and low temperatures.

Growing Scarlet from seed

Easy to germinate, sow thinly where the seeds are to flower. Do not cover, press lightly to the ground.

Try to aim for a seed spacing of at least 5.85 inches (15.0 cm) and sow at a depth of around 0.12 inches (0.3 cm). Soil temperature should be kept higher than 15°C / 59°F to ensure good germination.

Transplanting Scarlet

Best sown direct and thinned if necessary to allow enough room for each plant to grow

Ensure that temperatures are mild (minimum night temperatures should be around 10°C / 50°F) and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Scarlet is a half hardy plant.

Harvesting Scarlet

Seed heads can be harvested late summer, when completely dry on the plant.
Collect the seeds, and dry the seed head for dry arrangements or craft work

This variety tends to be ready for harvesting by late summer.
