Common Poppy 'Double Red'

Papaver somniferum

How to grow Common Poppy 'Double Red'

  • Partial Sun

  • Low

Try to plant in a location that enjoys partial sun and remember to apply water fairly sparingly. Keep in mind when planting that Double Red is thought of as half hardy, so it will need protecting in periods of cold weather.

Growing Double Red from seed

East from seed, sow thinly where they are to flower

Aim to sow 0.12 inches (0.3 cm) deep and try to ensure a gap of at least 5.85 inches (15.0 cm). Soil temperature should be kept higher than 15°C / 59°F to ensure good germination.

Transplanting Double Red

Sow thinly and thin the seedlings if necessary, to give the plants enough too to grow

Ensure that temperatures are mild (minimum night temperatures should be around 10°C / 50°F) and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Double Red is a half hardy plant.

Harvesting Double Red

Seed heads can be used in arrangements and for decoration. Collect when fully dry on the plant

This variety tends to be ready for harvesting by late summer.
