How to grow Chives 'Fine'

  • Full Sun

  • Medium

Try to plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Fine is thought of as hardy, so this plant will grow or become dormant during the winter. Ideally plant in sandy, clay and peat-rich soil and try to keep the ph of your soil between the range of 5.2 and 8.3 as Fine likes to be in weakly acidic soil to weakly alkaline soil.

Growing Fine from seed

Sow at a depth of approx. 0.51 inches (1.3 cm) and aim for a distance of at least 0.98 inches (2.5 cm) between Chives plants. Soil temperature should be kept higher than 15°C / 59°F to ensure good germination.

By our calculations, you should look at sowing Fine about 28 days before your last frost date.

Transplanting Fine

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Fine is a hardy plant.

Harvesting Fine

Harvest by cutting a clump of leaves at the base. Discard any flower stems.

This variety tends to be ready for harvesting by mid summer.
