How to grow Beetroot 'Gourmet Blend'

  • Full Sun

  • Medium

“Growing during hot temperature periods should be avoided.” 1

Try to plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Gourmet Blend is thought of as half hardy, so it will require protection in frosts and low temperatures. Ideally plant in loamy soil and try to keep the ph of your soil between the range of 6.5 and 7.0 as Gourmet Blend likes to be in weakly acidic soil to neutral soil.

Growing Gourmet Blend from seed

“To hasten germination, soak seeds for 8 to 24 hours before sowing.” 1

Sow at a depth of approx. 0.5 inches (1.27 cm) and aim for a distance of at least 3.96 inches (10.16 cm) between Beetroot plants. Soil temperature should be kept higher than 13°C / 55°F to ensure good germination.

By our calculations, you should look at sowing Gourmet Blend about 28 days before your last frost date.

Transplanting Gourmet Blend

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Gourmet Blend is a half hardy plant.

Harvesting Gourmet Blend

“For early spring sowings, harvest before summer heat. For late summer sowings, harvest before first heavy frost. For winter sowings in mild climates, harvest by March. Harvest when roots are anywhere from 2” – 3" in diameter. Do not let them get too big; the smaller they are, the more tender. Foliage can be harvested when 6" tall or shorter. You can take as much as one third of a beet plant’s leaves without harming the root crop; leave at least 2" of foliage above ground level." 1
