Sometimes needs support as the blooms can be a little top heavy. Remove old flower heads to prolong the flowering season
Phlox can be pruned before the flower heads form in may to delay flowering of some of the stems in the clump. This also increases the air circulation within the clump and may help to prevent mildew

Try to plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Barten is thought of as hardy, so this plant will survive close to or on freezing temperatures.

Growing Barten from seed

Phlox from seed is slow and unreliable, it is easier to use off sets in the spring or divide established clumps of your favourite plants, in the spring or autummn

Soil temperature should be kept higher than 15°C / 59°F to ensure good germination.

Transplanting Barten

Choose a sunny spot and use in the middle to the back of the border.
Constant moisture in summer will help prevent mildew as well as air circulation within the growing clump. But in some gardens mildew free phlox can be a challenge

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Barten is a hardy plant.
