All squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, and melons grow male flowers first then the female flowers are produced. The female flowers have tiny fruits at the base of the petals and require pollination by bees mostly. Incomplete pollination often happens at the beginning of the season, and results in misshapen fruit at the flower end. Just discard these damaged fruit. You can encourage bees to your garden by planting Buckwheat and/or Phacelia.

A full sun position will ensure your plant thrives and remember to water moderately. Sunburst F1 is generally regarded as a tender plant, so remember to wait until your soil is warm and the night time temperature is well above freezing before moving outside. Sunburst F1 needs a soil ph of 5.6 to 7.5 (weakly acidic soil - weakly alkaline soil).

Growing Sunburst F1 from seed

For optimal germination, soil temperature should be a minimum of 25°C / 77°F.

Transplanting Sunburst F1

When the plants are 7-10cm (3-4") tall, cut out (don’t pull) the shortest, leaving one strong plant. If it rains, and the soil cools, this planting may fail so replant or use transplants. They need warm, but not wet soils.

Raising transplants: Start seeds 3 weeks before your last frost date. Using bottom heat is helpful. Set one seed in each 7cm (3") pot. For best results, move to the garden before the plant has 4 true leaves.

Sunburst F1 is tender, so ensure you wait until all danger of frost has passed in your area before considering planting outside.
