Kind of fussy in hotter areas of the world, but once you find the appropriate shady moist spot they usually do best with neglect. After they bloom, the foliage can get a bit scruffy and then it dies back, so best to plant with something else that will help fill in the space. Ferns and hostas are popular choices.

Keep in mind when planting that Spectabilis is thought of as very hardy, so this plant will tend to go dormant over the long winter months.

Growing Spectabilis from seed

Aim to sow 1.95 inches (5.0 cm) deep and try to ensure a gap of at least 1.95 feet (60.0 cm).

Transplanting Spectabilis

Blooms Summer to Fall, depending on where you live. It prefers Partial Shade to Full Shade. In hotter areas, it is not drought tolerant – will benefit from supplemental water.

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Spectabilis is a very hardy plant.
