How to grow Cirsium rivulare 'Atropurpureum'

  • Full Sun

  • Medium

Plant out in the autumn to establish a new plant clump, in a sunny well drained position
After flowering cut down the stems to keep the plant tidy and encourage further flower stalks
Flowers all summer until the frost

Try to plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Atropurpureum is thought of as hardy, so this plant will survive close to or on freezing temperatures.

Growing Atropurpureum from seed

Can be grown from seed, but it is easier to split an established clump in the autumn after flowering
Use well drained compost with added grit or vermiculite, cover seeds only lightly

Soil temperature should be kept higher than 10°C / 50°F to ensure good germination.

Transplanting Atropurpureum

When the seedlings have germinated, transplant five seedlings into a 7 cm pot to establish a small clump, potting on as the plants grow
Well drained compost with added grit or vermiculite. Dappled sun whilst plants are still small

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Atropurpureum is a hardy plant.
