How to grow Chinese pepper 'Datil'

  • Full Sun

  • Medium

Try to plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Datil is thought of as half hardy, so protect with a row cover whenever the temperatures drop. Ensure your soil has a ph of between 7.0 and 8.5 as Datil is a neutral soil - weakly alkaline soil loving plant.

Growing Datil from seed

Start indoors six to eight weeks before last frost date.

Try to aim for a seed spacing of at least 1.95 inches (5.0 cm) and sow at a depth of around 0.2 inches (0.5 cm). Soil temperature should be kept higher than 18°C / 64°F to ensure good germination.

By our calculations, you should look at sowing Datil about 38 days before your last frost date.

Transplanting Datil

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Datil is a half hardy plant.

Harvesting Datil

Ripe peppers are about 3-1/2 inches long and a bright orange-yellow color.
