How to grow Tangerine

Citrus x tangerina

These typically grow 8 to 10 feet tall and grow best between 55 and 90 degrees.

Don’t let the hardiness zone discourage you. These can be maintained in containers and moved indoors for the winter for other zones. You will need to acclimate them both bringing them in and putting them back outside. Give a good soaking regularly rather than a little water daily as they prefer deep watering just make sure they do stay moist deep in the container.

When planting outside also be sure to acclimate them as many are grown indoors in greenhouses and it will shock them. Work them into the sun and outdoors gradually a few hours a day increasing each day over a period of about 3 weeks. If you see any browning of leaves lesson their sun exposure for a few more days and slowly move them out to full sun.

Keep your trees healthy by pruning any dead, diseased or crossed/rubbing branches and remove all suckers when ever they appear. Prune after harvesting as well.

Tangerines kept solely indoors will need to be pollinated by hand.3 Use a q-tip, brush or swab to transfer pollen between flowers.

Transplanting Tangerine

Plant rootball even with the surface of the soil. Do not add fertilizer to the hole at time of planting you can add fertilizer later to the topsoil.

Generally citrus trees are planted 15-20 feet apart with rows 20 feet apart. However tangerines can be planted 10-15 feet. If planting different types keep that in mind as trees like greatfruit need more like 25 feet where lemons, limes and other smaller ones only need 8 feet. Over crowding can limit fruit production.

There are many ways to plant and grow furit trees to fit your needs including hedging, grouping and training them. 1

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Tangerine is a hardy plant.

Harvesting Tangerine

Remove fruit with a gentle twist or nippers.3 Tasting is the best way to judge ripeness in these.3 Also the peel should peel easily when ripe. Always taste test before picking the lot as color does not always mean ripe. Once picked taste will not change. Pick fruits from the bottom up as the lower ones are more vulnerable to disease and frost. Tangerines have a nice sweet taste which is affected by heat of the summer. Hotter the weather sweeter the fruit.
