How to grow Rodgersia 'Smaragd'

  • Dappled Sun

  • High

Creeping roots allow the plant to spread slowly, and established clumps can be divided in spring or autumn

Try to plant in a location that enjoys dappled sun and remember to water often. Keep in mind when planting that Smaragd is thought of as hardy, so this plant will survive close to or on freezing temperatures.

Growing Smaragd from seed

Easier by division of mature clumps in the spring or autumn.
However seeds are possible, plant in ordinary potting compost mixed equal ports with grit. Place a layer of moss on top of the compost and sow the seeds onto the moss. Stand the pot in a gravel tray containing a layer of wet gravel, so the pots with the seeds are constantly wet but not waterlogged because of the gritty mix of the compost.

Soil temperature should be kept higher than 10°C / 50°F to ensure good germination.

Transplanting Smaragd

Grow on in a cold frame potting on if necessary.
Plant out the following spring after frosts. Choose a damp, or pond side, semi shade position, with humus rich soil

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Smaragd is a hardy plant.
