How to grow Giant Sequoia

Sequoiadendron giganteum

Plant out in a space suitable for the tree’s growth and expected size. It appreciates sun but a very exposed position could leave the tree vulnerable to storms and wind.

Growing Giant sequoia from seed

It would be best to be sure you have some where suitable to grow this tree before the seeds are germinated. Seeds are small and held in oval shaped cones, that helpfully(!) fall from the trees. Take the seeds from the scales of the cone and plant in a free draining seed mixture. Place in a cold frame, keeping the compost damp but not wet. Germination takes between 3 and 10 months

Transplanting Giant sequoia

Pot seedling on into a deep pot of well draining compost. Protect from wind

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Giant sequoia is a hardy plant.

Seed Saving Giant sequoia

Giant Sequoia have surprisingly small cones of only 4cm. These fall from the tree when ripe and usually still contain some of the tiny seeds.
