How to grow Rain Lily

Zephyranthes rosea

Rain lilies do best if grown in a well drained soil and should be watered moderately throughout the year, including occasional light watering during their dormant period. They do best if soil is kept moist, but not wet.

An excellent plant for borders, bulbs are best left undisturbed in soil until a clump needs thinning.

Rain lilies prefer morning sun, and should be protected from harsh afternoon western sun, particularly in hot climates. In cooler districts mulch the plants well in winter. Rain lilies can be damaged by temperatures of -2 deg C (28 deg F) or lower.

Some reports suggest that keeping rain lilies alternately wet and dry will trigger flowering. However, other reports suggest that the nitrates found in rain water may be the triggering factor, as irrigation does not always produce blooms.

Transplanting Rain lily

Transplant quickly from one bed to another and water in well.

As Rain lily is tender, ensure temperatures are mild enough to plant out - wait until after your last frost date to be on the safe side.
