How to grow Pomegranate 'Wonderful'

  • Full Sun

  • Medium

Water newly planted trees weekly for the first few months, until roots are established. Mature trees are drought tolerant, however, during blooming and fruiting periods watering will encourage even growth and better quality fruit. During the first three to five years the tree may drop immature fruits. This is normal and will resolve itself as the tree matures.

Plant in a location that enjoys full sun and remember to water moderately. Keep in mind when planting that Wonderful is thought of as half hardy, so it will need cloching or fleece protection when the temperature dips.

Growing Wonderful from seed

Make sure the seeds are completely clean before sowing. Even when clean, there is a constant battle against mold. Be vigilant. A drop of rubbing alcohol got rid of any mold spots I saw.

Keep seedlings moist and humid, but with air flow. I put mine on a vent with a clear grocery bag over. The bag was open enough for air flow, but closed enough to keep humid. It’s a delicate balance, but possible.

Transplanting Wonderful

Ensure that temperatures are mild and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Wonderful is a half hardy plant.

Harvesting Wonderful

Harvest fruit in September which is when they will be red in color.

Expect harvests to start to occur in mid autumn.
