How to grow Star Apple

Chrysophyllum cainito

Possible host for fruit flies.
-—————————————————
Added information: young plants exhibit difficulties in weather changes so it needs partial shades during dry seasons, and good soil drainage during rainy seasons.Kaymito’ can tolerate cold winds but not frost so it needed protections from frost exposures specifically its basement or root system.warm soil must be maintained during cold months by providing sheets of thick insulating materials around the plant basement in case it is planted in temperate zones.
During the first 6 months, the young trees should be watered weekly. Later irrigation may be infrequent except during the flowering season when watering will increase fruit-set. Most star apple trees in tropical America and the West Indies are never fertilized but a complete, well-balanced fertilizer will greatly improve performance in limestone and other infertile soils.

Growing Star apple from seed

Star apple trees are most widely grown from seeds which retain viability for several months and germinate readily. The seedlings bear in 5 to 10 years. Vegetative propagation hastens production and should be more commonly practiced. Cuttings of mature wood root well. Air-layers can be produced in 4 to 7 months and bear early. Budded or grafted trees have been known to fruit one year after being set in the ground. In India, the star apple is sometimes inarched on star apple seedlings. Grafting on the related satinleaf tree (C. oliviforme L.) has had the effect of slowing and stunting the growth.

Soil temperature should be kept higher than 20°C / 68°F to ensure good germination.

Transplanting Star apple

Seedlings must be transplanted in well drained clay loam soils.Star apple or Kaymito’ loves moist soil with plenty of humus.it grows well in climates with temp. Ranges from 19- 35 degrees celcius. In the Philippine tropics it grows well in lowland and medium elevations(around 400 mts altitude) but in my observations ,the sweetest fruits of Kaymito can be harvested in plants cultivated in medium elevation in clay loam soils with enough soil moisture and with temp. Ranges from 18 – 25 during short days and 24-33 degrees celcius during long day.everytime the onset of rainy seasons change, flowering of this tree do the same.months starting august to oct.flowers develop and make sorrounding fragrant in a subtle way but when cool winds destroy flowers followed by rains another batch of flowers will appear.in one yr, it develops flowers 3x before cold december winds arrive(between 9 and 15 degrees in medium elevation)

Ensure that temperatures are mild (minimum night temperatures should be around 20°C / 68°F) and all chance of frost has passed before planting out, as Star apple is a half hardy plant.

Harvesting Star apple

Fruits that are ready for harvest are obviously shiny and soft.there are two types of star apple, the green one and purple.

Seed Saving Star apple

Star apple seeds are hard and I think in room temp.. 28 C, it will remain viable even stored for 60 days.
